Saint Olaf Cemetery
at the Rock Church
Map of Cemetery Location

Plans for the cemetery were made at the time the property was acquired for the church, but the need of a burial place came before the church was built. Bersven Swenson's wife, Siri, died and was buried on April 25, 1885 (in plot 55.4). Siri had attended the funeral of her sister at Norse a month earlier in the cold and rain and developed pneumonia after giving birth to her seventh child.

When suitable wild flowers were not available, wreaths were made of cedar and tied with ribbons made from scraps of material to place on the graves.

When a death occurred, some families had to kill a hog or calf in order to provide sufficient food for all the people who came to visit. Rev. Rystad was concerned about the custom of serving a big dinner and also discouraged the serving of wine and cake.

Through the years, the original area for the cemetery has been enlarged in all directions. Fifth, sixth, and seventh generations of families have been laid to rest on this peaceful rocky hillside.

The Rock Church is located on County Road 1445, six miles west of the Norse Church, and three miles east of Cranfills Gap. It is open during the daylight hours only.
